Telangana has secured approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for all 34 government medical colleges to operate in the 2025–26 academic year. This comes after the state swiftly addressed faculty and infrastructure issues flagged in June. No MBBS seats have been cut, and no penalties were imposed. The state promoted hundreds of faculty members and launched major recruitment efforts while expanding hospital bed capacity. MBBS counselling is set to begin soon.
The NMC had earlier raised concerns about 26 institutions due to infrastructural deficiencies and staff shortages. To counter this, Telangana’s Health Department formed 10 monitoring committees on June 23 to carry out inspections and implement corrective action. The NMC, satisfied with these efforts, issued clearance for all colleges on July 9.
The approval secures all 4,090 MBBS seats across the 34 colleges. Additionally, the state has undertaken a massive staffing drive, promoting 44 senior professors to administrative roles, 278 associate professors to professors, and 231 assistant professors to associate professors.
A recruitment notification has also been issued for 607 new assistant professors through the Medical and Health Services Recruitment Board (MHSRB). The Finance Department has further cleared 714 new faculty posts to be filled soon.
The government is also tackling bed shortages in teaching hospitals by adding more than 6,000 beds across 21 hospitals to enhance clinical training and patient care. Counselling for MBBS admissions will begin after the announcement of Telangana NEET ranks, with the process to follow Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) norms.
