Telangana is poised to take a significant leap in Indian sport with the launch of its path-breaking Sports Policy 2025, heralded as the most ambitious initiative of its kind nationwide. Unveiled at the state’s inaugural Sports Conclave in Hyderabad, this landmark policy aims to foster grassroots expansion, champion athlete welfare, ensure inclusivity, and develop world-class infrastructure. The strategic vision is to place Telangana firmly among India’s sporting powerhouses, while laying a clear roadmap to Olympic glory and promoting equitable, active urban and rural communities.
The policy will be officially launched by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Minister for Sports Vakiti Srihari, and Chairman of the Sports Authority of Telangana, Shivasena Reddy. This high-level endorsement underscores the state government’s profound commitment to transforming the sporting landscape. A series of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are slated for signing with leading corporations invested in sports, global bodies such as FIFA, and renowned sports personalities. These collaborations are set to inject crucial expertise, investment, and influence, elevating sports in the state to an unprecedented level.
Telangana’s Sports Policy 2025 goes beyond celebrating podium finishes; it is designed to drive a state-wide transformation. It promises record-breaking rewards and long-term institutional support, strategically nurturing champions from diverse backgrounds. A core tenet of the policy is its deep commitment to inclusivity, aiming to extend cutting-edge infrastructure and world-class training facilities to every district, thereby effectively bridging the urban-rural divide. This ensures that talent from even the smallest villages has access to opportunities, fostering truly equitable development.
Minister for Sports Vakiti Srihari articulated the policy’s profound human angle, stating, “This is Telangana’s declaration to stand at the forefront of India’s sporting journey. Our vision is to build an ecosystem where every child — from the smallest village to the largest city — can dream of becoming a champion.” He emphasised that by empowering para-athletes and women athletes, the state aims to create not just medal-winners but inspiring role models. For Telangana, sport is seen as a holistic pursuit encompassing health, inclusion, opportunity, and a shared sense of pride for every citizen, contributing to healthier and more engaged communities.
To provide academic and professional heft, the state will establish a major sports university in Hyderabad. This institution will serve as a central hub for elite athlete training, sports science, and research, including dedicated programmes for para-sports. Complementing this, a sports academy, led by a national or international sports integrator, will focus on talent scouting across 14 priority sports, hosting high-performance training camps and global tournaments. A new sports development fund will ensure transparent and sustainable financing for these initiatives, supporting sustainable growth in the sector.
The inaugural Sports Conclave, headlined by icons such as Pullela Gopichand, Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang, and Anju Bobby George, will bring together top sports administrators and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) leaders. This powerful platform is set to shape the future of sport in Telangana. By fostering active lifestyles and community engagement through sports, the policy indirectly contributes to eco-friendly cities by promoting non-vehicular activities and reducing the burden on healthcare systems. This comprehensive policy is a testament to Telangana’s commitment to building a vibrant, healthy, and inclusive society through the power of sport.
