Telangana is set to experience a challenging weather pattern in May 2025, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting both intense heatwaves and heavy rainfall.
This combination poses significant risks to public health, agriculture, and infrastructure. The IMD has issued heatwave warnings for several districts in Telangana, including Adilabad, Kumurambheem-Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna-Sircilla, and Peddapalli. Temperatures are expected to soar above 40°C, with some areas potentially reaching 44°C. The heat is exacerbated by clear skies and high solar radiation during the day, leading to increased risks of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration.
In contrast to the daytime heat, the evenings are expected to bring heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly in North Telangana and Palamuru regions. These rains are associated with a trough extending from Rajasthan to Tamil Nadu via Vidarbha and Marathwada, situated approximately 900 meters above sea level. The sudden onset of heavy rainfall, often accompanied by strong winds, has the potential to cause flash floods, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to daily life. Farmers in Telangana are facing significant challenges due to the erratic weather. Unseasonal rains have damaged crops, with reports of soaked paddy and maize in market yards and washed-away grains. The combination of heat and rain disrupts the growth cycles of crops, leading to financial losses and food security concerns.
The dual threat of heatwaves and storms places immense pressure on infrastructure. High temperatures can strain electricity grids, leading to power outages, while heavy rains can overwhelm drainage systems, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Residents are advised to secure their homes and be prepared for potential emergencies. Health experts emphasize the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Drinking water regularly, consuming fresh fruit juices, and preparing homemade oral rehydration solutions can help maintain electrolyte balance. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions, should take extra precautions.
The Telangana government has initiated several measures to mitigate the impact of extreme weather. These include strengthening infrastructure, issuing timely weather alerts, and providing support to affected farmers. Community efforts, such as raising awareness and fostering solidarity, are also crucial in building resilience against climate extremes. As climate change contributes to the unpredictability of weather patterns, Telangana must invest in long-term strategies to adapt to extreme conditions. This includes enhancing disaster preparedness, improving agricultural practices, and promoting sustainable urban planning. By staying informed and proactive, residents can navigate the challenges posed by the current weather pattern and work towards a more resilient future.
