Telangana Expands Hyderabad Metropolitan Region With Future City Plan
Telangana’s urban development is set for a major transformation with the government’s decision to expand the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region (HMR) and establish the Future City Development Authority (FCDA). This move aims to create a new economic and infrastructural corridor, unlocking opportunities for growth while ensuring better planning and connectivity across the region.
The government has expanded the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region’s jurisdiction to cover 10,472.723 square kilometres, including 1,355 revenue villages from 104 mandals across 11 districts. At the same time, it has removed 36 villages from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority’s (HMDA) control and placed them under the newly formed FCDA. This reorganisation brings 765.28 square kilometres under FCDA’s governance, covering 56 revenue villages from seven mandals in Ranga Reddy district.
The Future City Development Authority will be led by the Chief Minister as Chairman, with the Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD), Industries, and IT serving as the Vice Chairman. Senior government officials, including the Chief Secretary and Finance and Industry Secretaries, will also be part of the authority, ensuring a comprehensive approach to urban planning and execution.
A key part of this expansion is the Regional Ring Road (RRR), a crucial infrastructure project designed to improve connectivity. The northern part of the RRR stretches from Kondapur in Sangareddy district to Choutuppal in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, while the southern section integrates the Future City area. To further support urban expansion, the government has included a two-kilometre buffer zone outside the RRR under the HMDA’s jurisdiction, which may later be developed as the RRR Growth Corridor.
This move is expected to attract investments, enhance real estate development, and improve urban infrastructure. However, the success of the initiative will depend on how well the government ensures sustainable growth and balanced land use in these newly designated zones.
