Mumbai: Tata Power is gearing up to significantly enhance electricity supply to Mumbai by augmenting its transmission capacity by up to 600 MW through the upgrade of several 110 KV transmission lines to 220 KV. This strategic move aims to meet the escalating demand from consumers, which has persisted despite the onset of monsoon rains.
According to company officials, Tata Power plans to upgrade additional 110 KV transmission lines across Mumbai, potentially bringing in an additional 1,000 MW of electricity in the future. Currently managing a network of 60 such lines spanning 700 km, the utility is poised to double its power-carrying capacity to effectively serve the city’s growing energy needs.
“We have initiated the necessary procedures and are in the process of obtaining approvals from the state transmission utility and the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission,” stated a Tata Power official, highlighting the proactive approach towards infrastructure enhancement.
Recently, Tata Power commissioned the new 220 KV Salsette-Kalva transmission line to strengthen the city’s transmission corridor, facilitating smoother power inflow. The initiative is part of Tata Power’s commitment to prevent recurrence of the blackout experienced by Mumbai in October 2020.
“To bolster operational resilience, Tata Power has developed comprehensive emergency protocols in collaboration with the State Load Dispatch Centre, ensuring swift corrective actions during transmission disruptions,” noted an official. The company has optimized system settings to minimize tripping or blackouts during operational disturbances, a significant improvement over past vulnerabilities.
Moreover, a substantial portion of Tata Power’s network is now underground, reducing the risk of faults, while digitalization enhances fault detection and restoration capabilities. “The upgraded infrastructure not only enhances Mumbai’s power reliability but also supports sustainable urban development by ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply,” emphasized a Tata Power spokesperson. As Tata Power advances with its ambitious infrastructure upgrades, stakeholders await the positive impact on Mumbai’s energy landscape, reinforcing the city’s resilience against future power challenges.
