Tata Power-led Odisha Discoms have orchestrated a remarkable transformation in the state’s power distribution network, installing over 40,000 new distribution transformers. This extensive capacity building is laying a robust foundation for enhanced energy reliability and equitable access across Odisha, marking a pivotal step towards building future-ready infrastructure crucial for sustainable and inclusive urban and rural development.
This large-scale augmentation of the distribution network has played a critical role in stabilising voltage fluctuations, significantly reducing technical losses, and improving the overall quality of power supply across both urban and rural regions. The strategic placement of these transformers has enabled more efficient load management during peak hours, effectively preventing local overloading and ensuring a more reliable, uninterrupted flow of electricity to newly electrified areas and those experiencing high growth. This enhanced network capacity is now better equipped to support the rising electricity demand from vital sectors such as agriculture, MSMEs, and domestic consumers.
Beyond the immediate benefits, the strengthened grid infrastructure also lays essential groundwork for future integration of renewable energy sources and the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. By ensuring a stable and robust distribution backbone, Odisha is positioning itself to seamlessly absorb more clean energy into its grid, contributing directly to the state’s and India’s broader zero net carbon emission goals. This forward-looking approach is vital for creating eco-friendly cities and fostering sustainable mobility solutions.
In addition to this significant infrastructure expansion, the Tata Power-led Discoms have delivered measurable gains in operational performance. Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses, a key indicator of efficiency, have been reduced by an impressive average of 11 per cent. Furthermore, over 10 lakh new connections have been energised, providing round-the-clock power availability in both urban and rural areas. This widespread access to reliable electricity is fundamental for fostering gender-neutral and equitable cities, empowering households and businesses alike.
This comprehensive capacity enhancement, underpinned by digitalisation, robust maintenance practices, and a customer-first approach, has positioned Odisha as a leading example of power distribution reform in India. The progress has garnered national recognition, with three Odisha Discoms achieving prestigious A+ ratings in the 13th Integrated Rating of Power Distribution Utilities for FY 2024. This external validation reinforces the success of the joint ventures between Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, which collectively serve a population of nearly 4.6 crore across four distribution companies: TP Central Odisha, TP Southern Odisha, TP Western Odisha, and TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited. These Discoms remain committed to building a resilient, responsive, and future-ready power distribution network that supports the state’s aspirations for inclusive growth and energy security.
