Tansa Pipeline Leak Causes Water Cuts in Powai, Surrounding Areas
Mumbai experienced significant water disruptions on Tuesday morning after a major leak was discovered on the Tansa water pipeline in Powai. The leak, which occurred near the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) bridge, prompted an immediate suspension of water supply in several areas, with repair work underway to fix the damage.
The leak, which occurred on the 1,450 mm diameter Tansa pipeline, led to the loss of several lakh litres of water. As a result, water supply was affected across multiple wards in the city, including S Ward (Bhandup), K East Ward (Jogeshwari and Andheri East), G North Ward (Dadar, Mahim, Dharavi), and H East Ward (parts of Santacruz, Khar, and Bandra East). The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) acted swiftly to contain the situation, with the hydraulic engineering department closing valves to prevent further water wastage and initiating emergency repairs. However, the repair work, which involves isolating the main pipeline from Powai to Maroshi, is expected to take at least 24 hours to complete. As a result, water supply is not expected to return to normal until Wednesday.
The disruption caused inconvenience to residents across the affected areas, with many left without water for essential daily activities. In Powai, the leakage was severe enough to flood some residential areas, particularly chawls. Local authorities have deployed water tankers in affected zones to help residents manage their drinking water needs. Chandrashekhar Waigankar, a former corporator, expressed concern over the sudden suspension of water supply, stating, “We had to arrange water tankers in the affected areas to ensure that people had access to drinking water and could manage household chores.” The BMC has urged residents to conserve water during this repair period and has assured that efforts are being made to restore services as quickly as possible.
