Tamil Nadu Trains To Get 38 New Stoppages From August Eighteen

Tamil Nadu’s railway network is set to enhance commuter convenience as 38 trains will receive additional stoppages across the state starting August 18, following public demand. Railway officials confirmed that express, superfast, and passenger trains will now halt at more stations, improving accessibility for residents across urban and semi-urban regions. The decision aligns with broader efforts to modernise infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience.

Railway authorities highlighted that these changes respond directly to petitions submitted by commuters requesting extra stoppages at stations including Ambur, Gudiyatham, Vaniyambadi, Irugur, Singanallur, Melappalayam, and Valliyur. Officials emphasised that each additional halt has been carefully assessed to minimise operational delays while maximising convenience. Infrastructure investment remains a key focus, with the Union government allocating Rs 6,626 crore for Tamil Nadu’s railway projects in the 2025–26 fiscal year. By comparison, allocations during 2009–2014 stood at Rs 879 crore, indicating a marked increase in funding for network expansion, modernisation, and service improvement. Experts note that this funding supports both immediate commuter needs and long-term infrastructure resilience.

Under the Amrit Bharat Railway Stations Scheme, 77 railway stations in Tamil Nadu are being upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs 2,948 crore. Chennai Egmore is a major focus, with Rs 800 crore allocated for redevelopment, alongside reconstruction works underway at Madurai, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Katpadi, and Salem. Officials stated that these projects will create modern, accessible, and sustainable station environments capable of handling increased passenger volumes. Work is also progressing on track expansion, with 2,587 kilometres of new lines under construction at a projected cost of Rs 33,467 crore. Projects include 10 new railway lines, three broad-gauge lines, and nine double-track lines. The Maduravoyal–Chennai Harbour elevated corridor is advancing at pace to reduce congestion and enhance commuter efficiency.

Railway experts emphasise that these initiatives are designed to create a more equitable and sustainable transport ecosystem. Expanding stoppages improves access for smaller towns and semi-urban populations while track upgrades and station modernisation promote operational efficiency and lower environmental impact by optimising train movement and reducing idling time. While commuter satisfaction is expected to improve, officials stress the importance of balancing operational efficiency with service expansion. Strategic planning ensures that added stoppages do not compromise train schedules or network reliability, with a focus on long-term benefits for passengers and city residents.

This approach reflects a broader commitment to sustainable transport, equitable access, and zero-carbon urban mobility goals, positioning Tamil Nadu’s railways as a model for state-level commuter-friendly infrastructure development.
