Tamil Nadu Ports on High Alert Amid Cyclone Threat

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Storm Warning Cage 3 at Pamban and Thoothukudi ports in Tamil Nadu, signalling the heightened risk of severe weather conditions.

This advisory comes as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensifies into a deep depression, with forecasts indicating potential further strengthening. According to the IMD, the depression is expected to move slowly northwards, bringing with it strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 mph, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph in certain areas. These conditions are anticipated to affect the Gulf of Mannar, the Komar area, and the adjacent Tamil Nadu coast. In response, the IMD has raised Storm Warning Cage 3 at Pamban and Thoothukudi ports to alert maritime and coastal communities of the impending hazards.

The IMD’s advisory also includes warnings of continued rainfall across Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Western Ghats districts. The atmospheric circulation over southern India is expected to sustain precipitation levels, with heavy rains continuing in some areas. Authorities have cautioned residents and visitors to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by local agencies. In preparation for the adverse weather, the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority has activated emergency response protocols. Fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea, and coastal communities are urged to secure properties and stay informed through official channels. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.

This development underscores the importance of timely meteorological advisories in safeguarding lives and property. The IMD’s proactive measures, including the issuance of Storm Warning Cage 3, exemplify the agency’s commitment to disaster preparedness and public safety. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay alert and cooperate with authorities to mitigate the impact of the impending weather system.
