Tamil Nadu Government Advances Hosur Airport Plans

The Tamil Nadu government has shortlisted two potential sites near Hosur in Krishnagiri district for the proposed greenfield airport.

This development follows the Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducting a preliminary evaluation of five locations, including areas near the existing Hosur airstrip and other sites such as Thogarai Agraharam, Shoolagiri, and Dhasapalli. The AAI has submitted a draft feasibility report, and the state government is now proceeding with a detailed study of the two selected sites. The proposed airport aims to bolster Hosur’s status as an industrial hub, facilitating enhanced connectivity and supporting regional economic growth.

The Tamil Nadu government envisions the airport as a catalyst for development in the surrounding districts, including Dharmapuri and Salem. The project is expected to handle up to 30 million passengers annually and cover approximately 2,000 acres. In parallel, the state government is addressing environmental and safety considerations associated with the proposed Parandur airport in Kancheepuram district. Activists and residents have raised concerns about the impact on local communities and ecosystems, leading to ongoing protests. The Tamil Nadu government is committed to balancing infrastructure development with environmental sustainability and community welfare.

As the Hosur airport project progresses, the state government remains focused on ensuring that development initiatives align with the broader goals of economic growth, environmental protection, and social equity. The forthcoming feasibility study will provide critical insights into the viability of the proposed sites and inform subsequent planning and implementation phases.
