Chennai: The long-awaited redevelopment of Tambaram railway station is finally set to proceed after a five-year delay. Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, the Rs 1,000 crore project aims to transform Tambaram into a state-of-the-art transit hub, elevating its status to that of major terminals such as Chennai Central and Egmore.
Creative Group, the consultancy firm overseeing the project, has recently unveiled the master plan and illustrations as part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The proposed design includes the construction of a new six-platform terminal building, significantly increasing the station’s capacity to accommodate more trains and passengers. Currently, Tambaram station handles a daily footfall of around two lakh passengers. The new terminal will feature modern amenities, including enhanced waiting areas and improved seating arrangements, ensuring a more comfortable environment for travellers.
A key component of the redevelopment is the introduction of a multi-level car parking facility, addressing the pressing need for additional vehicle accommodation. The current parking facilities at Tambaram are inadequate, with lots being full throughout the day as many residents from the city’s outskirts park their vehicles and take the train to their workplaces. The plan also focuses on enhancing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. Creative Group has committed to restoring footpaths and removing encroachments to improve accessibility. Furthermore, the redevelopment will incorporate dedicated ramps, elevators, and tactile paths to assist differently-abled passengers, ensuring inclusivity in the station’s design.
Local residents have expressed frustration over the delays. A resident-activist from Tambaram highlighted the lack of adequate facilities, noting, “There is only one escalator at the western end. There is no other escalator or lift to help commuters, who struggle to climb down three flights of steps. The foot overbridge, which is under construction, connecting arrival and departure platforms, is pending as only steel pillars are constructed and no horizontal structures are built to date.” The activist called for immediate fund allocation and expedited processes to benefit commuters. Addressing these concerns, a railway official clarified, “It is not the final design. The designs have been presented to the Railway Land Development Authority and must undergo multiple approvals before work can commence.” The redevelopment of Tambaram railway station is poised to significantly enhance the infrastructure and capacity of one of Chennai’s busiest stations, promising improved facilities and a better commuting experience for passengers.
