Synergy Marine Adopts AI-Powered Farming Onboard for Healthier Crews and a Greener Future

Synergy Marine Group has adopted Agwa’s AI-supervised farming system to grow fresh vegetables onboard its vessels. The initiative, which enhances onboard nutrition and supports sustainability, is part of a pilot project aboard the Suezmax tanker EFFIE MAERSK, launched in September 2024. This project reflects a shift towards a healthier and more sustainable future for the shipping industry, as AI-driven technology plays a pivotal role in improving the lives of seafarers and reducing environmental impact.

Synergy Marine is not alone in this transformative journey; industry leaders such as Eastern Pacific Shipping, Seaspan Corp, Capital Shipping, and CoolCo are also embracing Agwa’s autonomous vegetable-growing units. These self-contained systems use artificial intelligence, along with cameras and sensors, to control environmental factors such as light, temperature, water, and fertiliser, creating optimal conditions for plant growth. The automated units, which are similar in size to a standard refrigerator or wine cooler, can produce up to four bowls of fresh salad and a variety of herbs each week for the crew. The introduction of Agwa’s technology is a significant advancement in maritime sustainability. Traditionally, ships rely on costly and perishable fresh produce deliveries, which suffer nutrient loss over time. By growing vegetables onboard, Synergy Marine reduces food waste and eliminates the need for frequent deliveries. Moreover, it provides seafarers with a steady supply of fresh, healthy food during long voyages, directly enhancing crew morale and well-being.

For Captain Rajesh Unni, Synergy’s founder and Chairman, the project is deeply personal. Having witnessed firsthand the challenges of onboard life, he emphasizes the importance of nutritious food in boosting crew satisfaction. “Among today’s increasingly health-conscious mariners, we’re observing a noticeable shift towards healthier, plant-forward eating habits,” said Captain Unni. The AI-driven farming initiative not only caters to this shift but also reflects a broader commitment to environmental responsibility within the maritime industry. The sustainability aspect of this technology is particularly noteworthy. By reducing food waste and cutting down on the carbon footprint associated with food transportation, Agwa’s system contributes to a greener, more sustainable maritime industry.
