SVPI Airport Sees Strong Growth in Passenger and Cargo Traffic with Major Upgrades Planned for the Future

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport, managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), has posted impressive growth figures for the third quarter (Q3) of FY25, marking a notable achievement in India’s aviation sector. In the period between October and December 2024, the airport saw a significant 18% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic, reaching over 3.5 million flyers.

This is a marked improvement over the 3 million passengers recorded during the same quarter of FY24. Alongside the surge in passengers, the airport also saw a 15% increase in aircraft traffic movements (ATMs), with more than 27,000 flights operating through the airport in Q3. One standout achievement for SVPI Airport was December 22, 2024, which saw its highest passenger movement of the year, with 44,253 passengers and 324 ATMs. This record-breaking day was preceded by strong performances on December 12 and 13, further showcasing the rising demand for air travel from Ahmedabad.

The airport has been rapidly expanding its infrastructure and services, contributing to its success. Notable upgrades include the extension of Terminal-2’s check-in hall, an inter-terminal electric shuttle service, and the introduction of Wi-Fi coupon dispensers aimed at travellers with non-Indian SIM cards. Furthermore, new international flights have been introduced to destinations such as Da Nang, Guwahati, Dimapur, Thiruvananthapuram, Kolhapur, and Kuwait. Domestic services have also expanded, with additional flights to Kochi and Kolkata, further enhancing the connectivity of Ahmedabad with other parts of India and the world. Cargo operations have also witnessed remarkable growth, with Q3 cargo volume rising by 17% compared to the same period in the previous year. The airport handled over 17,900 metric tonnes (MT) of cargo, including more than 1,850 MT of international cargo. This represents a staggering 300% increase in international cargo volumes from Q3 FY24. SVPI Airport’s achievements reflect the larger ambitions of Adani Airport Holdings, which aims to position the facility as the premier gateway for passenger and cargo traffic in western India. The group is leveraging its expertise in transport and logistics to build a robust hub-and-spoke model that connects India’s major cities. This expansion is part of a larger effort to cater to increasing demand for both domestic and international connectivity.

The airport’s commitment to sustainability is also noteworthy. In December 2024, SVPI Airport was the only airport in India recognised for its exceptional energy conservation efforts, winning a prestigious Certificate of Merit at the National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2024. As SVPI Airport continues to grow, further upgrades are already in the pipeline. The next phase of development will focus on expanding infrastructure to accommodate increasing passenger numbers and growing cargo volumes. The airport also plans to introduce new international routes and improve the overall passenger experience through innovative services and state-of-the-art facilities. The growth seen at SVPI Airport is a testament to the robust demand for air travel in India, as well as Adani Airport Holdings’ commitment to enhancing connectivity and building world-class infrastructure to meet future aviation needs.
