Surat, known as the Diamond City, is set to witness a significant upgrade in its traffic management system, with the city police unveiling plans to intensify the use of CCTV cameras to alleviate congestion and crack down on traffic violators.
In response to the persistent traffic issues causing inconvenience and accidents on Surat’s roads, authorities have initiated measures to address the situation comprehensively. One of the key initiatives involves activating 202 signals that had long been non-functional, alongside the installation of 1,500 CCTV cameras at crucial junctions across the city. Speaking to the media about these developments, a police official highlighted the systematic approach being adopted to rectify traffic control system deficiencies. This includes the installation of timers at junctions to inform motorists about the duration of signal phases, as well as the fine-tuning of signal timings based on traffic flow patterns at major intersections. Moreover, efforts are underway to synchronize signals along stretches where multiple signals are present.
Plans are also underway for infrastructure modifications, such as road redesigns, circle enhancements, and speed-breaker adjustments, in collaboration with municipal authorities. Furthermore, the deployment of advanced camera technology, including red-light violation detection (RLVD), automated number plate recognition system (ANPR), speed violation detection (SVD), and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, underscores the commitment to enhancing surveillance capabilities for effective traffic management.
To complement these technological upgrades, the installation of public addressing systems at major junctions aims to alert motorists about signal compliance and guide them to the correct lanes. Initially, this system will be implemented at 50 key junctions across Surat, including prominent locations such as VR Mall, Bread Liner Circle, and the railway station. Overall, Surat’s ambitious initiatives signify a concerted effort to modernize and optimize traffic management strategies, leveraging advanced technologies and infrastructure enhancements to create smoother, safer, and more efficient traffic flow throughout the city.
