Surat Airport Officially Declared Operational on a Permanent Basis

Surat’s aviation landscape has undergone a significant transformation with the city’s airport now officially operational 24 hours a day on a permanent basis. This long-awaited development, formalised after a successful trial period, is a pivotal moment for the region’s economy and its burgeoning business community. The new round-the-clock status, which went into effect on Saturday, promises to enhance air connectivity, attract new airlines, and unlock the full economic potential of South Gujarat. This milestone is not merely a logistical upgrade but a powerful statement of the city’s growing importance on both a national and strategic level.

The journey to permanent 24-hour operations was a multi-faceted one, overcoming previous staffing and infrastructure limitations. While Surat airport was granted 24-hour status in 2018, it was not fully implemented due to a shortage of essential staff, including air traffic controllers. A major breakthrough came with a strategic initiative to declare several airports, including Surat, as 24-hour operational hubs. This plan was fast-tracked earlier this year during a military exercise, highlighting the airport’s critical location and its strategic value for national defence. A temporary 90-day notice was issued in May, allowing the airport to function round-the-clock for military aircraft emergencies, a trial that proved to be a resounding success and paved the way for the permanent change.

With this new status, Surat airport is now in a position to attract a new wave of late-night and early-morning flights, which will dramatically improve connectivity to major metropolitan centres. The increased operational hours will also make it possible for the airport to offer new international connections, opening up the world to the city’s residents and business travellers. The airport’s existing capacity, which includes 18 parking bays, can now be fully utilised for night parking. This is not only expected to generate additional revenue but also to incentivise more airlines to consider Surat as a viable and lucrative destination. The enhanced flight movements and improved scheduling will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to the local economy, particularly for sectors like diamond and textile industries, which rely heavily on efficient logistics and global connectivity.

While the new status is a cause for celebration, it also places a greater responsibility on the city to ensure its growth is sustainable and equitable. The focus on a 24×7 airport must be complemented by investments in eco-friendly and gender-neutral urban infrastructure. This includes creating a public transport system that is accessible and safe for all, regardless of the time of day, and developing green corridors that can help offset the carbon footprint of increased air travel. The city’s officials have confirmed that operational systems, including air traffic control manpower and runway lighting, are being streamlined to support the new profile. This dedication to ensuring a smooth transition is a positive sign, but the long-term vision must extend beyond the airport to encompass the entire city, creating a model of sustainable and inclusive growth for a zero net carbon future.
