State to Solarise 37,000 Anganwadi Centres

The state government has embarked on an ambitious solar power initiative. Announced in a recent cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the plan aims to equip 36,978 self-managed Anganwadi centres with solar power systems. This initiative underscores Maharashtra’s commitment to renewable energy and the improvement of vital community infrastructure.

The project will roll out in phases, with each centre set to receive a one-kilowatt capacity solar system, complemented by battery storage to ensure uninterrupted power supply. The solar installations are expected to significantly reduce dependency on conventional electricity sources, thereby cutting operational costs and contributing to environmental sustainability. The Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) will oversee the implementation of this green initiative, ensuring that the deployment of solar systems is conducted efficiently and systematically. The project, which was initially outlined during the recent budget session, has been allocated a substantial budget of Rs 564 crore.

This financial commitment reflects the state government’s dedication to enhancing the functionality and reach of Anganwadi centres, which play a crucial role in early childhood education and community welfare. By integrating solar power into these centres, Maharashtra aims to achieve multiple objectives like reducing the carbon footprint of its public services, lowering energy costs, and improving the reliability of power supply in remote and underserved areas.

This initiative is expected to create a ripple effect, inspiring similar green energy projects across other states and sectors. The phased implementation will be closely monitored to ensure timely and effective deployment. As the state moves forward with this significant project, it reaffirms its position as a leader in adopting innovative solutions to address both environmental and infrastructural challenges.
