Srinagar marked a historic milestone as India’s first Vande Bharat Express train officially commenced operations, connecting the Kashmir Valley with New Delhi by high-speed rail.
The inauguration, conducted remotely by senior officials, symbolises a new chapter in regional integration, infrastructure advancement, and sustainable transport for one of the most geographically challenging and politically sensitive parts of the country. This service is set to transform passenger experience by reducing journey time from nearly 22 hours to just over 11, effectively halving travel duration and opening up fresh economic and social opportunities. The 1,200-kilometre rail corridor covers some of India’s most demanding terrain, featuring engineering marvels such as the Banihal-Qazigund tunnel—the longest railway tunnel in the country—and the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge, which holds the distinction of being the world’s highest railway arch bridge. These infrastructural feats not only demonstrate Indian Railways’ technical prowess but also significantly enhance the connectivity and accessibility of Jammu and Kashmir to the rest of the nation.
Experts in transport infrastructure view this launch as more than a new train service; it represents a strategic investment in the region’s development and a boost to national unity. “High-speed connectivity to Srinagar will facilitate smoother economic activity, tourism growth, and social exchange, all while adhering to environmental sustainability principles,” said a senior railways official. The service aligns with broader goals of creating eco-friendly, low-carbon transport solutions essential for mitigating the impact of climate change. Designed with modernity and passenger comfort in mind, the Vande Bharat Express boasts state-of-the-art features tailored to the unique demands of the region. Operating at a maximum speed of 160 km/h, it maintains an average speed of 110 to 120 km/h depending on the landscape, with specialised coaches engineered to navigate the sharp curves and steep gradients typical of mountainous routes. The train includes executive class cabins with rotating seats and panoramic windows, allowing passengers to enjoy the breathtaking vistas of the Kashmir Valley in utmost comfort.
Adaptations for the harsh winter climate set this train apart from other services. It is equipped with heated floors, anti-fog windows, and snow-resilient braking systems, ensuring uninterrupted operations even under extreme weather conditions—a first for any train in India’s railway history. These features highlight Indian Railways’ commitment to year-round service reliability in diverse climatic zones. Safety remains paramount, with the train integrating the Kavach indigenous anti-collision system, comprehensive CCTV surveillance, fire detection alarms, and emergency communication tools in every coach. Digitally enabled, the train offers passengers onboard Wi-Fi, touchscreen infotainment, and real-time GPS tracking, enhancing the travel experience to contemporary global standards.
Sustainability is a core pillar of this venture. The train’s energy-efficient design incorporates regenerative braking technology and LED lighting, significantly lowering its carbon footprint compared to legacy diesel-powered trains. Manufactured entirely at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, it utilises 100% indigenous components, including lightweight aluminium-bodied coaches that improve speed, efficiency, and ease of maintenance—an embodiment of the Make in India initiative. Industry analysts note that this introduction not only marks a leap in passenger rail technology but also supports Delhi and Srinagar’s aspirations for a gender-neutral, inclusive, and equitable public transport system. Enhanced connectivity will facilitate easier access to education, healthcare, and employment for residents, particularly women and marginalised communities, fostering broader social inclusion.
The train’s route includes key stops at Jammu, Udhampur, Anantnag, and Qazigund, thereby knitting together major urban and semi-urban hubs along the corridor. This improved rail infrastructure is expected to bolster regional trade and tourism, catalysing economic diversification and contributing to the Kashmir Valley’s long-term stability and prosperity. However, with such transformative infrastructure projects come challenges, including the need to balance environmental preservation with development imperatives.
