Spike in Flu and Dengue Cases Among Chennai’s Children Worries Parents

Chennai is grappling with a concerning spike in flu and viral infections among children, with paediatricians reporting a surge over the past three weeks. Hospitals such as Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital and Apollo Children’s Hospital are seeing 60–70 children daily with flu-like symptoms. Influenza A and B viruses, along with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), are identified as the primary culprits. Additionally, 10–20% of cases are attributed to dengue, and an outbreak of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is affecting school-going children. Experts caution parents about symptoms like persistent high fever, severe cough, and fatigue, urging timely medical attention.

The flu season has been particularly distressing for families. Unlike the relatively manageable adenovirus infections earlier this year, the current flu strains present severe symptoms, including refusal to feed, drowsiness, and extreme fatigue. Doctors are emphasising the importance of hydration, rest, and avoiding over-the-counter antibiotics for viral fevers. Paracetamol, too, should be administered based on a child’s weight rather than age. For vulnerable children, such as those with asthma or compromised immunity, an annual flu vaccine is recommended. In severe cases, X-rays are conducted to rule out viral pneumonia, though such instances remain minimal.

From a civic perspective, this surge in cases highlights gaps in public health infrastructure and underscores the importance of preventive measures like vaccination and hygiene education. Overcrowded hospitals and delayed treatments strain healthcare systems, making it imperative for authorities to launch awareness campaigns. Schools must also play a role by promoting handwashing and monitoring symptoms among students to curb the HFMD outbreak.

On a sustainability front, prioritising public health aligns with urban development goals. Preventive healthcare measures reduce the burden on medical facilities and promote community well-being. Experts stress that early intervention and education can prevent recurring outbreaks, fostering a healthier and more resilient urban populace.
