Ahmedabad’s residential societies are grappling with a growing parking crisis, prompting many to approach the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for additional parking space. Amid the city’s rapid urbanisation, multiple societies have submitted proposals to lease plots, reflecting an urgent need to address the parking crunch.
An upscale bungalow society in Thaltej has requested a 1,000 sq m plot near Royal Crescent for a six-month lease, expressing readiness to adhere to AMC’s rules and fees. Similarly, a housing society in Bopal has sought to extend its parking arrangement to sections beneath the Vakil Saheb Bridge to accommodate visitor vehicles. According to the society’s chairman, the influx of 50 vehicles per hour, including those of guests, workers, and staff, has overwhelmed existing parking capacity, necessitating the request to AMC.
AMC Under Pressure as Parking Demands Rise
A senior AMC official acknowledged the increasing demand for parking facilities driven by the surge in residential complexes. However, questions remain regarding AMC’s decision-making process and fee structures for such arrangements. Societies must submit detailed proposals outlining the intended use of plots, but clarity on how these requests are evaluated is lacking.
Urban planning experts warn that this trend highlights deeper urban planning challenges. A local urban planner emphasised that managing parking spaces will be critical as the city grows, suggesting a need for strategic and sustainable solutions to balance public and residential requirements.
Revised Parking Policy Aims for Better Management
The revised Ahmedabad parking policy provides a framework for residential parking permits. Eligibility is limited to societies in designated parking zones, and permits can be issued for durations ranging from one month to a year. The AMC reserves 40% of paid parking spaces for permit holders, with the remaining 60% available for general use. Fees and regulations vary by location, with high-demand zones like arterial roads commanding higher fees. This policy aims to balance residential and public parking needs while ensuring fair allocation based on demand and feasibility.
Balancing Urban Growth and Parking Challenges
As Ahmedabad continues to urbanise, parking space allocation emerges as a critical civic issue. While AMC explores solutions, experts advocate for a sustainable approach to manage the rising demand without compromising urban liveability. Residential societies, meanwhile, await prompt action to alleviate the growing parking strain in the city.
