Southern Railway is making significant strides in enhancing passenger experience across Chennai’s railway stations. As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), the Chennai Division is overhauling the infrastructure at 15 stations, with a focus on increasing accessibility for passengers. A major component of this initiative is the installation of 85 lifts and nine escalators across 30 railway stations. This will facilitate smoother movement for passengers, especially those with disabilities, the elderly, and those with heavy luggage, making the stations more accessible and efficient.
Currently, 22 lifts have already been installed in 11 key railway stations, including Mambalam, Kodambakkam, and Melmaruvathur, with additional installations underway in Perambur, Washermenpet, and Chetpet. These efforts are expected to be completed by the end of the year, improving the commuting experience for thousands of passengers who rely on these stations daily. Moreover, the Chennai Division is also set to commission escalators at stations like Chengalpattu and Avadi, while work is progressing on escalators at Guindy, Mambalam, and Arakkonam.
The project is not only an enhancement of facilities but also an investment in sustainable urban transport. Each lift installation is a step towards reducing overcrowding and improving station flow, which helps in reducing energy consumption. While these lifts contribute to a more efficient and inclusive public transport system, they also reflect a commitment to long-term urban sustainability. The increased use of lifts and escalators can potentially reduce carbon footprints by making stations more accessible, thus encouraging the use of public transport over private vehicles.
However, there is a call for more such improvements. A resident of Pattabhiram, where a lift is being installed at Hindu College station, has raised concerns about the lack of lifts at Pattabhiram Railway Station. This highlights an ongoing issue—while significant progress is being made in terms of accessibility, there are still gaps in the overall infrastructure that need addressing. The addition of lifts in smaller stations like Pattabhiram is crucial to ensure that all passengers benefit from the upgrades, further contributing to the city’s goal of creating a sustainable and inclusive transport system.
