Tamil Nadu’s major cities, the Railway Board has approved the introduction of a new daily train service linking Tambaram to Rameswaram. Scheduled to begin operations soon, this train promises to enhance connectivity, improve travel convenience, and provide much-needed relief to commuters in the region.
The new service, set to be flagged off by the Prime Minister, will run daily, with the Tambaram–Rameswaram Express (Train No. 16103) departing from Tambaram at 6:05 PM. The train is expected to reach Rameswaram the following morning at 5:45 AM. Similarly, the return service, Train No. 16104, will depart from Rameswaram at 5:35 PM and arrive at Tambaram at 3:10 AM the next day.
The route will connect several important towns along the way, making it an essential addition to the region’s transport network. Passengers can expect to board the train at key stations including Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Chidambaram, with additional stops in towns like Karaikudi, Manamadurai, and Ramanathapuram, offering ease of access for local commuters.
The train will be equipped with modern Linke-Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches, designed to ensure comfort and safety for passengers. It will feature one 2-tier AC coach, five 3-tier AC coaches, six sleeper coaches, and four general coaches, as well as a luggage-cum-generator coach and a dedicated coach for differently-abled passengers. This well-equipped service aligns with Southern Railway’s ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet and enhance travel experiences for diverse passenger needs.
In a significant shift towards sustainable transportation, the Tambaram–Rameswaram Express will operate using electric traction from Tambaram to Tiruvarur. From Tiruvarur onwards, the train will be powered by diesel traction until it reaches Rameswaram, highlighting the adaptability of the Indian Railways to different operational environments. This mix of electric and diesel traction ensures that the train can maintain efficiency while accommodating the varied topography of the route.
While the service is expected to bring convenience to long-distance travelers, it is also likely to boost local economies in the towns along the route by facilitating quicker and more reliable transportation.
