Mumbai is set to unveil a significant addition to its urban infrastructure with the inauguration of the Reay Road Bridge on May 13, 2025.
This bridge stands as the city’s first land-based cable-stayed road overbridge, marking a milestone in modern engineering within the metropolis. Spanning 385 metres, the six-lane structure includes dedicated pedestrian pathways, aiming to enhance connectivity between Byculla and Mazgaon while alleviating traffic congestion in the area . The project commenced on February 14, 2022, following the demolition of the century-old British-era bridge it replaces. Despite initial plans for an earlier completion, the bridge was finalized in December 2024, with the inauguration scheduled for nearly six months later . Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹273 crore, the bridge was developed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Indian Railways .
The bridge’s design incorporates a central pylon cable-stayed system, which minimizes the need for multiple piers, thereby reducing the impact on existing underground utilities and facilitating smoother traffic flow beneath . Additionally, the structure features architectural LED lighting to enhance its visual appeal and a bridge health monitoring system to ensure ongoing safety and maintenance . Strategically positioned, the bridge connects Mahul Road near the Eastern Freeway to Barrister Nath Pai Marg, providing a direct route that is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters and freight vehicles alike . The project also includes provisions for maintaining the required vertical clearance under the Eastern Freeway, adhering to Indian Roads Congress standards .
The inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 7 PM on May 13, will also feature the remote opening of another road overbridge at Titwala, further emphasizing the city’s commitment to enhancing its transportation infrastructure . As Mumbai continues to evolve, the Reay Road Bridge exemplifies the city’s dedication to integrating modern engineering solutions that not only address current transportation challenges but also contribute to the aesthetic and functional enhancement of its urban landscape.
