South Central Railways Initiates Study for Kodangal-New Line Link

The South Central Railways (SCR) has commenced a feasibility study for a new railway line linking Vikarabad to Krishna, which is set to include the Kodangal constituency on the Indian railway map. Kodangal, long underrepresented in terms of rail infrastructure, is part of the proposed route that aims to connect several unconnected areas in southern Telangana, including Parigi, Makthal, and Narayanapet.

The feasibility study will evaluate both the technical feasibility and economic viability of the project, considering factors such as terrain challenges, land acquisition requirements, and projected ridership. Once completed and approved, the project will proceed to the construction phase, marking a pivotal development for the region.

Railway officials have highlighted that the new line is expected to significantly reduce travel distances to key destinations such as Hubli and Goa, streamlining both passenger and freight transport. This direct and efficient link is poised to benefit various sectors, including the cement industry concentrated in Tandur, by facilitating smoother movement of goods.

The proposed Vikarabad-Krishna railway line spans approximately 122 km and is estimated to cost around ₹2,196 crore. It represents a strategic investment by the railway ministry, underscoring its commitment to expanding and modernizing the country’s rail network. The project forms part of a broader initiative, with the railway ministry having sanctioned multiple final location surveys (FLS) for new lines covering a cumulative distance of 2,647 km, with an estimated investment of ₹50,848 crore.

“This development marks a transformative change for Kodangal and surrounding areas, addressing long-standing infrastructure gaps and fostering economic growth,” commented a senior railway official. The inclusion of Kodangal in the railway network is expected to unlock new opportunities for trade, tourism, and regional development, underscoring the strategic importance of enhanced connectivity in driving socio-economic progress.

As the feasibility study progresses and plans materialize, stakeholders await further updates on the timeline and milestones for the construction of the Vikarabad-Krishna railway line, anticipating a positive impact on the region’s connectivity landscape.
