The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore has forecasted significant rainfall across several districts in South Bengal on Wednesday, signalling an escalation in monsoon activity in the region. While Kolkata and its adjoining areas experienced moderate showers on Tuesday, the intensity of the rainfall is expected to increase, particularly in districts such as Purulia, West Burdwan, and Birbhum, where heavy downpours are anticipated.
The weather pattern, driven by a developing low-pressure area, is set to bring widespread rain across South Bengal. This system is likely to intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area, moving west-northwestwards, which could further enhance rainfall activity in the region. The Met Office has warned that the active monsoon conditions could lead to persistent heavy rainfall, affecting both urban and rural areas. On Thursday, the rainfall is expected to continue, with moderate to heavy showers likely in districts including North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas, Purulia, West Burdwan, Birbhum, and Nadia. The ongoing monsoon, which has been particularly active in August, is poised to deliver a substantial amount of rain over the next few days, contributing to the season’s overall precipitation levels.
Kolkata, which had been facing a 20 per cent rainfall deficit for the season, has seen a turnaround in August. The city recorded 253 mm of rain between August 1 and 19, surpassing the average expected rainfall of 200 mm for the month. This surplus is largely due to the recent weather patterns, which have brought consistent rain to the city and its surroundings. The intensifying monsoon in South Bengal raises both concerns and expectations among residents and authorities. On one hand, the heavy rainfall is essential for replenishing water resources and supporting agriculture, particularly in the rural districts. On the other hand, the potential for waterlogging, especially in urban areas like Kolkata, poses challenges for infrastructure and daily life. The city’s drainage systems, often strained during heavy downpours, will be put to the test once again as the rains persist.
Authorities are urging residents to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions and to take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to flooding. The ongoing monsoon, while beneficial in many respects, also demands vigilance and preparedness to mitigate any adverse impacts. As the monsoon season continues to unfold, the people of South Bengal are likely to experience a mix of relief and concern, with the promise of rain bringing both nourishment to the land and challenges to everyday life. The next 48 hours will be crucial in determining the extent of the impact, as the low-pressure system continues to influence the region’s weather patterns.
