Sonepur International Airport Project Cleared By Cabinet

Bihar has approved plans for a major aviation infrastructure project in Saran district, clearing the development of the Sonepur International Airport with a 4.2-kilometre runway designed to accommodate large, long-haul aircraft. The decision marks a significant expansion of the state’s aviation network and reflects growing demand for improved air connectivity across northern Bihar.

The proposed greenfield airport will be developed across more than 4,200 acres in the Dariyapur Chawar region between Hajipur and Dumaria. Officials say the facility is expected to become the largest airport in Bihar and among the bigger aviation projects planned in eastern India, with a targeted completion timeline around 2030. A central feature of the project is the 4.2-km runway, which meets international aviation standards and can support wide-body aircraft operations. Infrastructure planners note that such runway capacity allows long-distance international flights and large cargo aircraft to operate without technical restrictions, positioning the airport as a potential hub for passenger travel and freight logistics.

The Sonepur International Airport initiative also addresses long-standing capacity constraints at Patna’s existing airport. The current facility, located within a dense urban zone, faces operational limitations due to surrounding infrastructure and runway restrictions, which makes it difficult to handle larger aircraft or significant traffic growth. Urban infrastructure experts say expanding aviation capacity outside the capital city is consistent with a broader strategy seen across India, where regional hubs are developed to reduce congestion at legacy airports while supporting balanced regional growth. By locating the new airport near major road and river corridors, planners aim to improve accessibility for districts across north Bihar.

In addition to passenger travel, the project could reshape economic activity in the surrounding region. Airports with long runways and cargo infrastructure often become anchors for logistics parks, warehousing clusters and export-oriented industries. Improved connectivity also tends to stimulate tourism and investment, particularly in regions with strong cultural or religious travel demand. The state government has already allocated over ₹1,300 crore for land acquisition, signalling the beginning of preparatory work needed before large-scale construction begins.

Beyond its immediate aviation role, the Sonepur International Airport could also influence urban expansion patterns around the Patna metropolitan region. Transport economists note that major airports frequently catalyse the development of satellite townships, hospitality infrastructure and commercial zones as accessibility improves. However, infrastructure specialists caution that successful implementation will depend on timely land acquisition, environmental clearances and integration with road and rail networks. Ensuring efficient last-mile connectivity between the airport and nearby cities will be essential for the project to function as a genuine regional gateway.

If delivered on schedule, the project could transform Bihar’s aviation landscape by providing the capacity for direct international flights while strengthening connectivity for millions of residents across the state’s northern districts.
