After years of anticipation, Solapur has finally regained a direct air connection with Mumbai, marking a milestone moment in the city’s push for economic revival and improved regional connectivity. The inaugural flight between the two cities was launched this week under the government’s UDAN regional air connectivity scheme, aimed at linking underserved cities and enhancing accessibility across Maharashtra.
Officials hailed the service as a transformative step for Solapur’s industrial, cultural, and employment landscape. The resumption of air travel to Mumbai, after a long hiatus, is expected to draw fresh investment, expedite ongoing infrastructure projects, and provide vital support for local enterprises that depend on faster logistics and business travel. Experts from the state government noted that Solapur’s diverse economy — spanning textiles, engineering, and manufacturing — had long been constrained by weak transport links. “For industries to scale up and attract national and global partnerships, seamless air connectivity is critical,” said an official from the state industries department. The route will also reduce travel time for entrepreneurs and professionals, bridging the gap between Solapur and Mumbai’s financial ecosystem.
The service is equally seen as a catalyst for tourism and cultural exchange. Solapur, known for its historic temples such as the Siddheshwar Temple and the nearby Pandharpur Vitthal-Rukmini pilgrimage site, draws lakhs of devotees annually. Improved access is expected to bolster eco-tourism and hospitality infrastructure, aligning with Maharashtra’s vision of promoting sustainable and inclusive travel. Officials also confirmed that with the operationalisation of the route, delayed projects such as the planned IT Park in Solapur will now move forward. “Earlier, many investors hesitated due to the lack of air connectivity. With this link operational, we can fast-track technology and service sector expansion,” a senior development official stated. The project is projected to generate new employment opportunities for local youth and enhance skill development initiatives.
The Mumbai–Solapur service is being operated under the Centre’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) programme, which subsidises regional flights to make them affordable and commercially viable. Aviation analysts point out that such connections not only bridge economic disparities between metro and Tier-II cities but also reduce the carbon footprint associated with longer road journeys. “Regional flights, when integrated into sustainable mobility planning, help decongest highways and cut emissions per passenger kilometre,” said a transport expert.
