The Central Railway’s Solapur Division has executed a meticulously planned operation to manage the colossal influx of devotees converging on Pandharpur for the ten-day Ashadhi Fair, which commenced on July 1 and culminates on July 10. With Ashadhi Ekadashi, the central event, having occurred on July 6, railway officials anticipated over 15 to 16 lakh pilgrims, including approximately 2 lakh arriving by train. This comprehensive strategy, involving 119 special train trips and extensive on-ground arrangements, showcases a commitment to safe, accessible, and dignified public transportation for large-scale cultural gatherings, aligning with the principles of equitable and well-managed urban and pilgrimage centres.
To effectively address the anticipated surge in passenger traffic, the Solapur Division has augmented its regular services with an impressive deployment of 119 special train trips. This significant increase in capacity is crucial for accommodating the vast number of pilgrims from various parts of the country, ensuring smooth and timely connectivity to and from Pandharpur. Beyond merely increasing train frequency, senior railway officers from commercial, electrical, and security departments have been strategically stationed at Pandharpur to directly oversee operations, ensuring real-time responsiveness and efficient coordination during peak hours.
Recognising the unique challenges posed by the monsoon season, the railway authorities have proactively established dedicated holding zones and sheltered waiting areas. These provisions are critical in preventing overcrowding on platforms and ensuring the safety and comfort of pilgrims, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. This foresight in planning for adverse weather conditions underscores a commitment to passenger well-being and proactive risk management, contributing to a more resilient public infrastructure that can adapt to environmental factors.
At the heart of these meticulous arrangements is a central Fair Control Office, which has been established at Pandharpur station. This control hub is equipped with 62 high-definition CCTV cameras, facilitating real-time monitoring of crowd movements and security situations across the station premises. To streamline the ticketing process and minimise inconvenience for pilgrims, the Solapur Division has significantly expanded its ticketing infrastructure. Numerous temporary ticket counters have been set up, complemented by the deployment of mobile Universal Ticketing System (UTS) devices and Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs). These diversified ticketing options cater to a wide range of passenger preferences and help distribute the demand, reducing queues and wait times. Furthermore, “May I Help You” desks are actively assisting passengers on the ground, providing crucial guidance and information, thereby enhancing the overall travel experience through human-centric support.
The presence of dedicated ticket checking staff and security personnel, strategically spread across all platforms, plays a vital role in maintaining order and assisting with seamless boarding and de-boarding procedures. Their active engagement ensures not only compliance with ticketing regulations but also effective crowd control and immediate assistance to pilgrims, particularly those who may require extra support such as the elderly, families with children, or individuals with special needs.
