Solapur Airport Set for Takeoff Following Upgrades

Solapur Airport in Maharashtra is nearing its operational debut following a series of significant infrastructure upgrades. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) convened a crucial meeting to address the remaining challenges associated with the airport’s readiness.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, disclosed that the Union government has invested approximately ₹50 crore under the UDAN-RCS (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik – Regional Connectivity Scheme) to enhance the airport’s facilities. The minister also revealed that staff training is underway and urged officials to expedite the licensing process with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). During the meeting, Mohol engaged with airline representatives from Akasa, Indigo, and other carriers, advocating for potential flight routes including Solapur-Tirupati, Solapur-Delhi, and Solapur-Hyderabad. The airport’s infrastructure has seen notable improvements, including the completion of a 2,100-meter runway, which supports 72-seater aircraft. However, operational constraints remain due to a smaller chimney from a nearby sugar factory, which limits aircraft capacity to a maximum of 60 passengers until it is removed.

Solapur District Collector provided an update, indicating that the DGCA has granted in-principle approval for the airport’s operating license, with a final inspection scheduled in the coming weeks. The recent demolition of a taller chimney that posed a significant obstacle to airport operations has paved the way for this development. With these advancements, Solapur Airport is set to enhance regional connectivity and support local economic growth, marking a significant milestone in Maharashtra’s aviation infrastructure.
