Sitarama Lift Irrigation (LI) project in Telangana is scheduled to commence operations on August 15, 2024. Located in Dummugudem village within Bhadradri Kothagudem district, this project stands as the third largest irrigation initiative in the state, following the Kaleshwaram and Palamuru Ranga Reddy schemes. The Sitarama project is poised to significantly enhance agricultural productivity by providing water to the erstwhile Khammam district and parts of Warangal.
On Wednesday, the state’s Irrigation Minister conducted a review of the final arrangements for the inauguration. During the event, the Chief Minister will officially release water from the second pump house to the downstream areas, marking a key milestone in the project’s implementation. The Sitarama LI project is part of a broader strategic plan to revitalise irrigation infrastructure across Telangana. To optimise the completion of pending projects, the state government has categorised ongoing initiatives into three groups: Category A for nearly completed projects, Category B for those exceeding 50% completion, and Category C for projects under 50% completion. This classification aims to streamline efforts and allocate resources effectively.
The overarching goal is to irrigate 5.84 lakh acres through these projects, with an investment of Rs 7,500 crore. This initiative is expected to substantially improve water availability for agriculture, addressing longstanding issues in irrigation management and boosting crop yields. The Sitarama Lift Irrigation project is seen as a pivotal development in Telangana’s agricultural strategy, enhancing water distribution capabilities and supporting the state’s agrarian economy. As the state gears up for the project’s launch, the successful deployment of this infrastructure is anticipated to have far-reaching benefits for regional farming communities and contribute to the state’s overall agricultural growth.
