Kolkata, signalling its intent to attract private stakeholders in key sectors such as tourism, renewable energy, and organic agriculture. This strategic move, a precursor to the “Sikkim Global Investors Summit” later this year, underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable development and green growth. The event, attended by a cross-section of industry leaders, financial institutions, and tour operators, positions Sikkim as a burgeoning hub for responsible investment, aiming to foster a zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable urban-rural continuum.
Under the leadership of its Commerce and Industries Department and in collaboration with Invest India, Sikkim showcased its unique value proposition. Thomas Chandy, Secretary of Commerce and Industries, highlighted Sikkim’s 100% organic farming status, rich biodiversity, and people-centric governance model as compelling reasons for investment. The state is actively promoting investor-friendly policies, attractive incentives, and a stable political environment, aiming to facilitate seamless entry for businesses keen on sustainable ventures. This approach is not merely about economic growth but about building an economic model that respects and preserves the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, aligning with global goals of environmental stewardship.

Tourism, a cornerstone of Sikkim’s economy, is being reimagined with a strong emphasis on eco-consciousness. While popular destinations like Tsomgo Lake, Yumthang Valley, and Namchi continue to draw visitors, the government is actively seeking investments in projects such as homestay circuits, wellness resorts, adventure tourism hubs, and eco-villages. This expansion is meticulously planned to safeguard local culture and the pristine natural environment. Kolkata-based tour operators have expressed keen interest in developing curated travel experiences that blend nature, spirituality, and sustainability, fostering a model of tourism that benefits local communities and minimises environmental impact. This focus on responsible tourism is a testament to Sikkim’s dedication to creating a truly sustainable and gender-neutral tourist experience, empowering local populations, including women, through economic opportunities.
Sikkim’s immense hydropower potential was a key focus of the outreach. Despite existing hydroelectric plants, a significant portion of its renewable energy capacity remains unharnessed. The state is actively encouraging investments in micro and small hydro projects, solar energy installations, and green energy storage systems, promising fast-tracked clearances for such initiatives. This strategic push into green energy aims to meet regional power demands sustainably and establish Sikkim as a leader in clean energy production.
Furthermore, Sikkim’s status as India’s first 100% organic state presents unparalleled opportunities in agri-businesses. Officials highlighted success stories of local farmers exporting spices, herbs, and vegetables globally. The government is now promoting agri-based entrepreneurship through food parks, cold storage units, and processing centres, inviting Kolkata-based businesses to explore agri-tourism and farm-to-fork ventures in collaboration with local cooperatives. This commitment to organic farming not only ensures healthier produce but also contributes to soil health and biodiversity, forming a critical component of a zero-net carbon urban-rural future.
The operationalisation of Pakyong airport and improved highway access via NH-10 have significantly enhanced Sikkim’s connectivity, transforming it from a remote destination into a well-connected hub. Officials assured investors of robust logistics support, digital infrastructure, and planned industrial zones to create an even more conducive business environment. New industrial and tourism policies, offering capital subsidies, tax waivers, and skill development support, coupled with a single-window clearance system, underscore Sikkim’s commitment to simplifying investment procedures. A dedicated Sikkim Investors Cell will provide comprehensive assistance, promising transparency and long-term partnership models, solidifying Sikkim’s position as a prime destination for green investment and a blueprint for creating truly sustainable and equitable cities.
