Shoddy Roads in Chennai Suburbs Raise Safety Concerns

As heavy rainfall looms over Chennai, residents of Erikarai in Noombal, Iyyappanthangal, face worsening road conditions that endanger daily commuters. The roads, riddled with potholes and uneven surfaces, are a long-standing issue, particularly along Oil Mill Road and its parallel stretch. Despite repeated complaints to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the Tiruverkadu Municipality, the situation remains unresolved. Temporary fixes, such as sand fillings, have failed to address the underlying problems, leaving the stretch hazardous for the high volume of vehicular movement.

The risks posed by these shoddy roads extend beyond inconvenience to genuine threats to safety. A resident recounted a recent incident where a motorcyclist sustained injuries after losing control due to a deep pothole. Others emphasised the challenge of commuting with children, highlighting the constant danger of accidents. Long-time residents, some of whom have endured these conditions for over a decade, lament the lack of a permanent solution. Despite sporadic attempts by local authorities to re-lay sections of the road, no lasting measures have been implemented.

The issue is further complicated by unclear jurisdiction, as parts of the affected area fall under the GCC and others under the Tiruverkadu Municipality. This fragmentation in responsibility has left residents in confusion about where to direct their complaints. Attempts to reach officials have yielded no response, exacerbating frustrations. The lack of cohesive governance in addressing such fundamental civic issues is evident in the persistent neglect of road safety.

From a sustainability perspective, poorly maintained roads contribute to vehicle wear-and-tear, increased fuel consumption, and heightened emissions, undermining efforts towards eco-friendly urban mobility. Ensuring durable infrastructure would not only reduce environmental impact but also enhance the quality of life for local communities. The call for a long-term, sustainable solution is more pressing than ever, as residents brace for the challenges posed by impending rainfall.
