Shillong Airport Boosts Aviation with Runway Upgrade

The state government has finalised plans to acquire 11.75 acres of land for the much-anticipated expansion of Shillong Airport’s runway. The cabinet has approved a compensation package totalling ₹72.17 crore, paving the way for infrastructural upgrades that could transform the airport into a key aviation gateway in the Northeast.

Of the land earmarked for expansion, approximately 4.3 acres are currently held by defence authorities, while over 6.6 acres will be acquired from local landowners. A committee led by the Deputy Commissioner was tasked with conducting transparent negotiations with affected residents. The compensation includes payouts for land, crops, trees, and built structures, ensuring that the project aligns with fair and equitable land acquisition practices. The state government’s decision comes at a time when Meghalaya is actively seeking to improve regional accessibility, both for its residents and growing number of tourists. With increased interest in eco-tourism and heritage travel to the region, Shillong Airport’s capacity has come under pressure, especially during peak seasons.

The planned runway extension is expected to enable the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, which currently face operational limitations due to the short runway. This upgrade will not only improve flight frequency and reliability but also reduce dependence on neighbouring airports in Assam, enhancing Meghalaya’s self-reliant aviation footprint. Officials confirmed that once the land is handed over to the Airports Authority of India, construction will take approximately 18 months. Subject to timely regulatory clearances—including environmental and central approvals—the state aims to transfer the site by September 2025, setting a March 2027 target for completion of the new runway.

The expansion also includes comprehensive terminal building upgrades. This integrated development model is designed to cater to future passenger demands and support sustainable tourism without overburdening existing infrastructure. Importantly, the project also holds socio-economic value. It is expected to generate local employment during construction and operational phases while creating opportunities in hospitality, retail, and transport sectors. Stakeholders believe this will support inclusive development in East Khasi Hills and surrounding districts. While the overall vision is ambitious, government officials have assured that environmental sensitivities of the region will be respected.

The project is expected to comply with zero-net-carbon goals and sustainable planning guidelines to minimise ecological disruption. Shillong’s airport upgrade, once completed, will significantly alter the region’s connectivity map. As the Northeast pushes for integrated development through better mobility, this expansion stands as a timely response to Meghalaya’s long-pending infrastructure needs bridging its natural beauty with accessible, future-ready aviation solutions.
