The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is constructing a six-lane bridge over the Ganga River between Sherpur in Patna and Dighwara in Saran district.
This ambitious project, part of the Patna Ring Road, is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Patna and the surrounding regions. The bridge, approximately 9 km in length, is part of a larger 14.52 km project that includes approach roads and ramps. The total estimated cost of the project is ₹3,200 crore. Construction is underway, with the project expected to be completed by September 2027. The bridge is being built under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode, with SP Singla Constructions Pvt Ltd as the contractor.
Once completed, the bridge will provide a direct link between Patna and Saran district, reducing travel time and easing traffic congestion on existing routes. It will also serve as a vital component of the Patna Ring Road, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people across the region. The bridge is expected to benefit residents of Saran, Siwan, and Gopalganj districts by providing a more direct route to Patna and the Bihta airport, which is currently under construction. The new route will reduce the distance from Chhapra to Bihta airport by approximately 30-40 km, eliminating the need for residents to travel via Sheetalpur, Sonepur, or Hajipur.
In addition to improving connectivity, the bridge will also provide year-round access to the diara areas of Patna, which are often cut off during the monsoon season due to flooding. A proposed ramp on the western side of the bridge will connect these areas to the rest of the city, ensuring continuous access throughout the year. The Sherpur Dighwara bridge is expected to be a game-changer for the region, promoting economic growth and regional development. It will enhance trade and commerce by providing a more efficient transportation route, benefiting both urban and rural communities. This project aligns with the government’s vision of creating sustainable and equitable infrastructure that caters to the needs of all citizens. By improving connectivity and reducing travel time, the bridge will contribute to the overall development of Bihar, fostering a more integrated and prosperous region.
