The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) at Kandla witnessed a significant boost in its infrastructure as Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shantanu Thakur, inaugurated and laid the foundation for several key development projects on 28 May 2025.
The event, held in Gandhidham, was attended by senior port officials, trade representatives, and local dignitaries, reflecting the government’s commitment to modernising port facilities and enhancing operational efficiency. Central to the new developments is the construction of a state-of-the-art Seafarer Centre designed to offer world-class amenities for seafarers arriving at the port. The centre promises to provide a holistic environment for rest and recreation, including a waiting lounge, shopping area, medical facilities, storage spaces, a salon, dedicated zones for music and yoga, a gymnasium, café, basketball court, and a covered swimming pool surrounded by landscaped gardens. This initiative aims to foster a seafarer-friendly ecosystem that prioritises well-being and comfort, aligning with international standards.
Another critical aspect of the infrastructure upgrade includes the extension of the port’s railway infrastructure by 750 metres, connecting Berths 13 to 16 with Kutch Salt Junction. This strategic expansion is expected to streamline cargo movement and bolster long-haul connectivity, especially with the integration of the upcoming Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). The enhanced rail link is anticipated to improve logistics efficiency, reducing transit times and supporting the port’s role as a multimodal logistics hub. Additionally, the installation of a new telescopic gangway at the port has been completed to facilitate safe and efficient access between vessels and the jetty. Designed in adherence to the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) safety standards, this modern access system is vital for ensuring the safety of crew members and port personnel during vessel operations.
Further strengthening the port’s emergency preparedness, a dedicated Fire Brigade Station has been established within the port’s operational zone. The station includes office space for fire and immigration staff and is equipped with a 50-kilolitre underground water storage tank, significantly enhancing the port’s capacity to respond promptly to emergencies and maintain high safety standards. Officials at Deendayal Port Authority emphasised that these projects are part of a broader vision to modernise port infrastructure, promote operational excellence, and create an inclusive, seafarer-centric environment. This comprehensive development aligns with the national agenda of building resilient and sustainable maritime infrastructure to support the growing demands of trade and commerce under the Viksit Bharat initiative.
The ongoing upgrades at Deendayal Port underscore the strategic importance of modern ports in facilitating economic growth, boosting export-import activities, and integrating multimodal transport solutions. With these new infrastructure projects, the port is poised to enhance its competitiveness while ensuring safety, sustainability, and comfort for all stakeholders involved.
