To alleviate long-standing traffic congestion and waterlogging issues, authorities have approved a ₹132 crore infrastructure project aimed at constructing a new road directly over the Shahberi drain.
This initiative is expected to bring substantial relief to residents and commuters in the Shahberi area, particularly during the monsoon season. The stretch from Shahberi Pulia to National Highway 9 (NH-9) has been notorious for severe waterlogging and traffic snarls, especially during heavy rains. Over 29 housing societies and numerous colonies in this area have been grappling with these issues, leading to daily hardships for residents and commuters alike. The new project aims to address both the drainage and traffic concerns simultaneously. The approved plan involves the construction of a robust drainage system coupled with a road built directly over the drain.
This dual approach is designed to ensure effective water discharge while facilitating smooth vehicular movement. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been allocated the necessary funds to execute the project, with construction set to commence shortly. Once completed, the project is expected to enhance connectivity between Shahberi and NH-9, significantly reducing travel time and easing congestion in the area. The road’s design will accommodate the needs of daily commuters, including office-goers, school buses, and goods vehicles, thereby improving the overall traffic flow. While the project promises to alleviate urban flooding and traffic issues, environmentalists have raised concerns about the potential impact on drainage and flood management. Covering the drain to construct the road may hinder de-silting operations and lead to water stagnation. Experts suggest that authorities should ensure proper maintenance and de-silting plans are in place to mitigate these risks.
The Shahberi Drain Road project is part of a larger effort to improve urban infrastructure in the National Capital Region (NCR). Similar initiatives, such as the widening of the Shahberi-Crossings Republik Road and the construction of elevated roads in Greater Noida, are underway to address traffic congestion and enhance connectivity. These projects reflect a concerted effort by local authorities to modernize urban infrastructure and improve the quality of life for residents. As the Shahberi Drain Road project progresses, it is anticipated that the combined efforts will lead to a more efficient and sustainable urban transport system, benefiting thousands of daily commuters and contributing to the overall development of the NCR region.
