The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Sholinganallur has revoked the permits of five private sewer lorries for illegally disposing of sewage into the Buckingham Canal. This decisive action comes under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, following a list of penalised vehicles provided by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB). This incident underscores the ongoing struggle to maintain environmental sanctity amidst rapid urbanisation.
The violation was uncovered by a vigilant team of Metrowater officials operating within Zone 15. The team had previously apprehended these vehicles for discharging untreated sewage into the canal, a serious breach under the Septage Management Act. Such activities not only jeopardise the health of local communities but also threaten the ecological balance of the region’s water bodies. In response to growing concerns about improper sewage management, the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department introduced the ‘Septage Management Regulations and Operative Guidelines’ last year. These guidelines are specifically designed to regulate the transportation and disposal of sewage in areas lacking a comprehensive sewer network. The regulations aim to protect waterbodies and waterways from contamination, thereby safeguarding public health and the environment.
