Serilingampally Faces Severe Water Contamination as Drainage Mixes with Drinking Water

Residents of Premnagar and New Hafeezpet in the Serilingampally mandal are facing an alarming crisis of water contamination, as drinking water from the Manjeera pipeline is getting mixed with sewage from nearby houses. The problem is caused by improper drainage connections, and it is affecting around 15 households in the locality. Despite multiple complaints raised by the residents, no long-term solution has been implemented, leaving the issue unresolved for months.

The water contamination has become a persistent challenge for the residents, with temporary fixes proving ineffective. According to local reports, the issue was first raised by the residents several months ago, but despite the seriousness of the situation, the authorities have not provided a permanent remedy. “We have raised two complaints, but there has been no lasting solution. The issue continues, and it’s causing a lot of distress to everyone in the locality,” said one of the affected residents. Temporary fixes, such as cement being applied to the pipeline by a worker from the water board in August, have failed to resolve the underlying problem. As Balbheem, another resident, explained, the cement began to drip off due to leakage from the other pipelines, exacerbating the issue.

The residents have expressed frustration at the inaction from the authorities. They say that although the water board has acknowledged the problem by sending workers to the site, the solutions provided have been insufficient and short-term. L. Yamini, one of the concerned residents, pleaded, “We have been raising concerns for a long time. It is crucial that the authorities take immediate steps to permanently separate the water and sewage connections to ensure that the residents get clean, safe water.”

From a civic infrastructure standpoint, the Serilingampally case exemplifies the systemic issues many urban areas face when it comes to water supply and drainage management. Cities like Hyderabad, which are rapidly expanding, often struggle to keep pace with the growing demands for basic utilities like water and sanitation. The situation in Serilingampally highlights the urgent need for better planning, more robust infrastructure, and an effective response from municipal bodies to protect residents’ health. The improper mixing of drinking water with sewage not only leads to inconvenience but also raises concerns about public health, with risks of waterborne diseases.

On the sustainability front, the Serilingampally water contamination issue is a stark reminder of the challenges cities face in maintaining both water and waste management systems that can support growing populations. As cities continue to expand, ensuring that infrastructure keeps up is vital for urban sustainability. More attention needs to be paid to the quality of urban planning and infrastructure development to avoid such contamination incidents, as well as to protect water resources from pollution. Long-term investment in upgrading the water supply and drainage systems will not only address these issues but also contribute to the overall health and sustainability of the urban environment.

In this context, residents in Serilingampally have called for a more concerted effort to implement permanent solutions. Until this happens, the residents continue to live in uncertainty, and the broader issues of urban water management remain an ongoing concern for the city.
