Maersk have formalised a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on advancing decarbonization solutions for vessels and optimising global supply chain efficiencies. This strategic alliance, announced at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center, marks a pivotal collaboration between a leading shipbuilder and a global logistics giant, aiming to accelerate the transition to zero-net-carbon shipping and foster more eco-friendly global trade networks.
The partnership builds upon a robust foundation of prior collaboration, notably HD Hyundai’s delivery of 19 methanol-powered container ships to Maersk since 2021, including the world’s first methanol-powered ultra-large container ship last year. This history underscores a shared commitment to pioneering green shipping technologies. The new MoU extends this collaboration into critical new areas, including the innovative application of advanced navigation solutions and comprehensive retrofitting for decarbonisation across existing fleets.
A key initiative under the MoU involves a six-month trial program that will integrate cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) powered navigation and route optimisation systems on a Maersk container vessel previously built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Specifically, Avikus’ HiNAS (Hyundai Intelligent Navigation Assistant System), an advanced navigation solution designed for energy-efficient vessel operations, will be deployed alongside HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s OCEANWISE route optimisation software. The primary objective of this rigorous trial is to meticulously validate the tangible fuel-saving and greenhouse gas emission-reduction impacts achievable through optimised navigation systems, directly contributing to cleaner skies and more sustainable maritime travel.
Beyond operational efficiencies, the collaboration will delve into ship retrofitting projects aimed at decarbonisation. This encompasses optimising engine efficiency to reduce fuel consumption, increasing container ship cargo capacity to maximise efficiency per voyage, and retrofitting existing vessels with dual-fuel propulsion systems, allowing them to operate on cleaner alternative fuels. Such initiatives are crucial for the current global fleet, ensuring that the existing assets can be repurposed for a greener future, thus accelerating the industry’s journey towards zero emissions and aligning with the principles of sustainable urban development by reducing pollution at port cities.
Furthermore, a significant element of this partnership involves joint research into the feasibility of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) systems for marine applications. SOFC technology represents a cutting-edge approach to cleaner energy generation on vessels, offering high efficiency and reduced emissions compared to traditional combustion engines. The exploration of such advanced propulsion and power generation systems demonstrates a forward-looking commitment to truly transformative decarbonisation, moving beyond incremental improvements to fundamentally reshape maritime energy landscapes.
In parallel with the technological advancements in green shipping, HD Hyundai will significantly enhance its global supply chain resilience by leveraging Maersk’s extensive integrated logistics services. This strategic integration will see an expansion of ocean freight volumes utilising Maersk’s robust East-West network, alongside the strategic deployment of Maersk’s capabilities across airfreight services, comprehensive land transportation networks, and warehousing infrastructure. The initial phase of this logistics partnership will focus on tailoring solutions for HD Hyundai’s key affiliates, including HD Hyundai XiteSolution and HD Hyundai Marine Solution, with a phased rollout planned across other group entities. This aims to bolster the stability and agility of HD Hyundai’s global supply chain, ensuring seamless movement of components and products worldwide.
This comprehensive collaboration underscores a shared vision for a sustainable maritime future. By combining HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding and marine technology prowess with Maersk’s unparalleled integrated logistics network, the partnership seeks to establish a leading example of innovation in the global logistics market. The emphasis on safety, low-emissions, and optimal efficiency in developing a sustainable maritime logistics network is paramount. This forward-thinking alliance not only accelerates the decarbonisation of the global shipping industry but also sets a precedent for how major industry players can collaboratively contribute to a greener, more efficient, and interconnected global economy, fostering the development of more eco-friendly and equitable cities around port areas.
