Sealdah Subway Eases Access for Metro Users

Kolkata’s long-awaited subway connecting the East-West Metro station with Sealdah railway station was opened to the public on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to improve urban mobility. This new underground passage comes nearly three years after the Sealdah Metro station began operations and is expected to ease the daily commute for tens of thousands of passengers who rely on this transport hub. The subway, which links Sealdah railway station with key areas like Sealdah court and BR Singh Hospital, promises to offer enhanced convenience, particularly during peak hours and in adverse weather conditions.

Sealdah station is a critical node in Kolkata’s transportation network, accommodating approximately 35,000 to 40,000 passengers every day. This includes commuters arriving from suburban areas via the railway station, many of whom transfer to the Metro for further travel. The opening of the subway is expected to significantly reduce congestion, offering a faster and more comfortable way for passengers to transition between the two stations. As one official noted, the subway will not only ease overcrowding but also provide a safer and more streamlined route, especially during rush hours when the concourse area of the railway station can become overwhelming.

For commuters, the subway offers a practical solution to the challenges they face daily. With the new passageway, passengers no longer need to navigate the crowded spaces within the railway station. The subway segregates pedestrian traffic from rail and road traffic, creating a more orderly and efficient system for those accessing the station platforms or the metro. Additionally, it provides ramps for differently-abled individuals, making it a more inclusive option for all commuters. This attention to accessibility is an important step towards creating a more equitable urban transport environment.

The subway’s opening also comes at a time when the East-West Metro is poised to extend its full 16.6 km route, connecting Sector V with Howrah Maidan in the near future. As Sealdah Metro station sees increased usage, the new subway will help manage the growing footfall and ensure smoother transitions between the metro and railway stations. This timely addition is seen as an essential development for Kolkata, especially given the expected rise in metro passengers in the coming months.

The subway is equipped with modern amenities, including ventilation systems and clear signage, to enhance the passenger experience. Its completion has been welcomed by transport authorities who have emphasized its role in improving the overall flow of commuters through Sealdah, one of Kolkata’s busiest transit centres. By separating pedestrian pathways from vehicular traffic, the subway ensures that passenger movement remains efficient, even during peak periods.

Kolkata’s investment in expanding its transport infrastructure reflects a larger commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly urban development. The subway not only addresses immediate transportation challenges but also serves as a step towards creating a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment. With initiatives like this, the city is moving closer to its goal of building an efficient, zero-carbon public transport network that benefits all residents.
