The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has undertaken a significant initiative to preserve urban greenery by translocating 157 mature trees, thereby avoiding their removal for infrastructural development. This proactive measure has been implemented in response to public concerns regarding tree removal from the Miyawaki Park at the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex.
In an official statement, the CMDA clarified that rather than resorting to tree felling for new projects, a more sustainable approach has been adopted—transplanting mature trees to alternative locations. The authority cited the ongoing development of a new park in Koyambedu’s Open Space Reservation (OSR) area as an example. While the majority of trees in the adjacent forest and green belt are retained, approximately 20%-30% have been carefully relocated to parks in Kilambakkam and Porur. This includes trees affected by the construction activities of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), which have been successfully transplanted to Kilambakkam Park.
An expert from a private architectural firm involved in the project highlighted the meticulous planning required for such endeavours. The expert noted that factors such as tree species, age, height, and health are thoroughly assessed to ensure successful transplantation. “Even centennial trees like banyan and peepal have been relocated,” he stated. The ideal period for translocation, according to the expert, is during the monsoon season, as the process can be detrimental during summer.
The branches and some roots are pruned, while the main trunk and significant root system are preserved. New shoots typically emerge within a few months, provided the trees receive regular care and treatment every three months to ensure their survival.
This initiative by the CMDA not only safeguards the city’s green cover but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainable urban development. By choosing to transplant rather than fell trees, the CMDA sets a precedent for environmentally conscious practices in urban planning.
