Save Aarey campaign marks 150 weeks amid rising land grabbing concerns

The persistent ‘Save Aarey’ campaign has now reached its 150th week, drawing renewed attention to escalating concerns over alleged land grabbing and illegal constructions within the designated eco-sensitive zone (ESZ). Environmental activists are raising alarms about private entities and film studios reportedly violating regulations, posing a significant threat to Mumbai’s vital green lung. This ongoing struggle underscores the critical challenge of balancing urban development with the preservation of natural ecosystems, crucial for the city’s environmental health and its journey towards sustainable living.

Numerous complaints have been lodged with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the state environment department, and the Aarey Milk Colony administration regarding these alleged encroachments. Despite these appeals, activists lament a perceived lack of decisive action, asserting that the entire Aarey colony falls within the notified ESZ of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The accusations include widespread land grabbing, illicit tree felling, and the unchecked expansion of unauthorised structures, directly undermining the ecological integrity of this invaluable urban forest.

For over three years, environmental groups have consistently highlighted the proliferation of large sheds and film studios within the eco-sensitive zone. Concerns are mounting that the Aarey administration has largely overlooked these violations, with previous complaints reportedly being routinely forwarded without subsequent enforcement. This perceived inaction has prompted discussions about potential legal recourse, emphasising the urgency of judicial intervention to protect this critical natural asset from further degradation and commercial exploitation.

Adding to the growing pressure, a prominent political leader has publicly demanded the immediate demolition of structures erected by film studios and private companies on land previously designated for cow shelters. These allegations suggest a deliberate conversion of green reserved land into commercial and warehousing hubs, raising questions about accountability and oversight from various civic and environmental authorities. Notices have reportedly been issued to several studios recently, indicating a potential shift towards stricter enforcement.

The Chief Executive Officer of Aarey has acknowledged that land was initially allocated to companies through proper tendering procedures. However, in response to the complaints, show cause notices have now been issued to entities reportedly using godowns and engaging in debris dumping. The administration has indicated that further action will be taken if satisfactory explanations are not provided. Communication has also been established with the municipal corporation regarding debris dumping and other encroachments, signalling an attempt to address the ongoing issues.

The future of Aarey Milk Colony remains a critical litmus test for Mumbai’s commitment to becoming a zero net carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable city. The preservation of this green space is not merely an environmental imperative but also a social one, ensuring clean air, biodiversity, and recreational spaces for all citizens. Effective governance, stringent enforcement of environmental laws, and sustained public vigilance will be paramount in safeguarding Aarey for future generations and upholding Mumbai’s ecological aspirations.
