Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is witnessing a significant influx of investment from leading corporations, positioning the city as a burgeoning industrial hub. Major players such as Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Ather Energy, Lubrizol India Private Limited, and JSW Green Mobility have committed substantial capital to Aurangabad Industrial City (AURIC), highlighting Sambhajinagar’s rising prominence in the industrial landscape. However, this surge in investment has intensified calls for urgent infrastructure improvements to support the city’s rapid growth and ensure sustainable development.
Key stakeholders, including the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture (CMIA), are emphasising the critical need for enhanced road infrastructure. The CMIA Secretary has stressed the importance of constructing multiple ring roads to seamlessly connect the industrial zones of Bidkin, Shendra, and Waluj. These ring roads are envisioned to facilitate smooth traffic flow, enabling efficient transportation of goods, services, and manpower without entering the city’s congested areas. In addition to road infrastructure, there is a growing demand for improvements in public transportation. Advocates are calling for the commencement of metro services and the enhancement of city bus networks to accommodate the increasing population and workforce influx.
A strategic priority for the city’s development is the expansion of the airport and improved air connectivity. Despite a significant allocation of Rs 734 crore in the state budget for 2023-24, progress on the airport expansion has been slow. Analysts argue that accelerating this project is crucial for the city’s connectivity and attractiveness to international investors. Water management is another pressing issue. Stakeholders are urging for the expedited completion of the Rs 2,740 crore water project, the construction of a comprehensive water grid for Marathwada, and the diversion of water from west-flowing rivers to address the growing demand for water in the city and its industrial zones.
Maharashtra’s cabinet minister, who has played a pivotal role in attracting investment to Sambhajinagar, reassured that the state government is actively addressing these infrastructure challenges. The minister confirmed that discussions are ongoing with various authorities regarding road and public transport improvements. The airport expansion is under review by relevant bodies, while the new water project is on track for completion by March 2025. The government is also considering additional water projects to support the city’s expansion. As Sambhajinagar gears up to become a leading industrial and investment destination, these infrastructure enhancements will be crucial in sustaining its growth trajectory and ensuring the city can effectively support its expanding economic and industrial base.
