Sabarmati Gurugram Vande Bharat Special Train Launched To Boost Green Travel

Sabarmati: The Indian Railways has expanded its high-speed network with the launch of the Sabarmati–Gurugram Vande Bharat Special train, marking another milestone in India’s move towards faster, energy-efficient, and eco-smart transportation. The new service, operated by Western Railway, commenced on 5 October and is expected to enhance regional connectivity while reinforcing the government’s vision for sustainable mobility.

The Sabarmati–Gurugram Vande Bharat Superfast Special, numbered 09401, is currently operating as a one-way service. The train departs from Sabarmati at 5.30 am and reaches Gurugram at 8.25 am the next day, covering the journey in approximately 14 hours and 30 minutes. It makes eight scheduled halts Mehsana Junction, Palanpur, Abu Road, Marwar Junction, Ajmer, Jaipur, Alwar, and Rewari ensuring connectivity to key cities across Gujarat and Rajasthan before arriving in Haryana. The launch of this new route comes amid the Railways’ broader modernisation drive to make train travel cleaner, quicker, and more passenger-friendly. Railway officials confirmed that the Sabarmati–Gurugram service will operate with advanced electric multiple units featuring aerodynamic design, regenerative braking, and energy-efficient traction systems. These features are expected to reduce overall energy consumption and carbon emissions significantly, reinforcing the railways’ transition towards a net-zero transport model by 2070.

With fares fixed at ₹2,250 for AC Chair Car and ₹4,145 for Executive Chair Car, the train offers passengers premium comfort, onboard digital connectivity, and better seating ergonomics. Officials added that the introduction of such services will not only cater to business and leisure travellers but also encourage a modal shift from short-haul flights and road journeys to electric rail  a critical step in India’s low-carbon transport strategy.Experts say the Vande Bharat series has become a flagship of India’s mobility transformation, combining indigenous technology with an eco-conscious design ethos. Each new addition expands access to high-speed, fully electrified routes, aligning with the government’s aim to replace ageing diesel rakes with cleaner, faster alternatives.

The Sabarmati–Gurugram connection is particularly significant as it links key industrial and tourism corridors, facilitating regional trade while minimising environmental impact.n addition, the train’s design prioritises inclusivity and safety, with improved lighting, accessible boarding for differently-abled passengers, and real-time surveillance systems to enhance security especially for women and senior citizens. Such human-centric design features reflect a shift towards gender-neutral and equitable mobility infrastructure, consistent with India’s broader push for inclusive urban transport planning.Railway officials indicated that more such services could follow as part of a phased expansion, with sleeper versions of the Vande Bharat trains currently under development. As Indian Railways continues to electrify its routes and modernise operations, the new Sabarmati–Gurugram service underscores how the nation’s transport network is being reshaped to meet the dual demands of speed and sustainability  ensuring growth that is both people-centric and planet-friendly.
