RVNL Signs Rs 90.65 Crore Deal To Install Surveillance At 484 Southern Railway Stations

Southern Railway has initiated a major project to bolster passenger security and operational efficiency by awarding a substantial contract to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for the installation of advanced Video Surveillance Systems (VSS). This ₹90.65 crore initiative targets 484 stations, with a particular emphasis on bringing modern surveillance capabilities to smaller, previously underserved stations. This strategic move aligns with a broader vision for a gender-neutral, equitable, and sustainable public transport ecosystem, ensuring that safe and reliable travel is accessible to all.

The project’s scope is a significant step towards closing the security gap between major urban hubs and smaller commuter stops. Under the terms of the 18-month contract, new VSS will be deployed at 441 D and E category stations, which are often lifeline connections for local communities. Simultaneously, existing surveillance infrastructure will be upgraded at 43 higher-category stations (A1, A, B, and C). This comprehensive network expansion will create a more secure and reliable environment, encouraging a greater shift towards rail travel and thereby supporting the city’s zero-net-carbon goals by reducing reliance on private vehicles.

This technological overhaul is more than just a security measure; it is a foundational pillar of a sustainable public transport strategy. The new systems, equipped with modern CCTV cameras and centralised monitoring, will enable real-time tracking and provide invaluable data for post-event analysis. This not only deters criminal activity but also enhances the overall management of station premises, improving crowd control and response times during emergencies. For daily commuters, particularly women and vulnerable groups, this upgrade provides a critical sense of security and trust, which is essential for fostering an inclusive urban environment.

The contract win also underscores the government’s unwavering focus on modernising railway infrastructure across the nation. The execution of this project by a prominent public sector undertaking signals a commitment to leveraging domestic expertise for large-scale, socially impactful initiatives. This strategic partnership is poised to set a new benchmark for station security and operational excellence. By investing in resilient, tech-driven solutions, Southern Railway is building a robust transport backbone that is not only safer and more efficient but also intrinsically linked to the long-term sustainability and equitable growth of the region.
