RVNL Secures Rs 115.79 Cr Contract for Electric Traction Upgrade in Central Railway

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, has won a key infrastructure contract valued at ₹115.79 crore from Central Railway.

The project aims to upgrade the electric traction system in Maharashtra, with a specific focus on enhancing freight movement capacity. The Letter of Acceptance (LOA), recently issued by Central Railway, pertains to modification work on the Overhead Equipment (OHE) for converting the existing 1×25 KV system to a more efficient 2×25 KV Auto Transformer (AT) feeding system. This upgrade will be carried out in the Itarsi–Amla section under the Nagpur Division. The improved traction system is designed to support freight trains carrying up to 3,000 metric tonnes (MT), a move expected to boost the operational capacity and efficiency of one of the region’s most critical freight corridors.

The total contract value stands at ₹115,79,37,241.11, inclusive of all applicable taxes. RVNL confirmed the award in a stock exchange filing, clarifying that the contract was secured in the normal course of business. Incorporated in 2003, RVNL functions as the construction arm of the Ministry of Railways, tasked with implementing high-priority transportation infrastructure projects across India. The PSU has played a pivotal role in accelerating the pace of railway modernisation and capacity enhancement initiatives.

As rail-based freight continues to gain traction in India’s logistics sector, such technological upgrades are essential to support increased loads and ensure efficient movement of goods across economic corridors.
