Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Ajay Tamta, announced that road construction projects worth Rs 73,000 crore are currently underway in the state. These projects, spearheaded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aim to enhance connectivity and promote tourism in the region.
However, the announcement has sparked a political debate. Tamta criticized the state government’s alleged lack of cooperation, claiming that delays in obtaining necessary clearances have stalled several central projects. He emphasized that the central government has invested heavily in the state’s infrastructure, and any hindrances are due to the state government’s inefficiency. The major projects include the construction of approximately 768 kilometres of highways and 68 tunnels. Notable projects are the Shimla-Mataur stretch, estimated at Rs 10,512 crore; Kiratpur-Manali at Rs 13,784 crore; and Pathankot-Mandi at Rs 10,067 crore. These initiatives are expected to significantly reduce travel time and boost local economies.
Despite the ambitious plans, challenges persist. The state’s mountainous terrain poses engineering difficulties, and the monsoon season often leads to landslides, disrupting construction. Additionally, the coordination between state and central agencies has been a point of contention, with both sides blaming each other for delays.
The opposition parties in Himachal Pradesh have responded by accusing the central government of politicizing development projects. They argue that the state government is committed to the state’s progress and that any delays are due to unforeseen circumstances, not administrative inefficiency.
As the political discourse continues, the residents of Himachal Pradesh remain hopeful that the ongoing projects will eventually lead to improved infrastructure, better connectivity, and enhanced economic opportunities.
