RPF Launches Crackdown on Railway Crime and Overcrowding in Mumbai

Mumbai’s Central Railway (CR) network, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has initiated proactive measures to enhance security and passenger safety.

Special teams, comprising 4-6 personnel each, have been deployed to patrol railway stations and trains along the crucial CSMT-Kalyan/Panvel routes from 6am to 10pm. The primary objective of these teams is to crack down on criminal activities within railway premises and address issues related to overcrowding, which pose significant risks to commuter safety. Recent incidents, including a stabbing onboard a CSMT-Kasara local train and fatalities resulting from overcrowding, have underscored the urgent need for such interventions, according to RPF officials.

Since April 29, these specialised teams have been actively identifying and apprehending suspicious individuals, particularly those belonging to ‘train groups’ known for intimidating regular commuters. To bolster security measures, RPF personnel are conducting thorough checks, including biometric scans, to track and monitor individuals lacking valid identification. Furthermore, the RPF is closely monitoring stations experiencing high levels of overcrowding, particularly during peak hours. In an effort to mitigate risks associated with overcrowded trains, passengers are being advised to board the next available train if they are observed hanging dangerously from footboards. This initiative aims to prevent tragic incidents such as commuters falling off moving trains due to overcrowding.

The recent surge in railway-related crimes and overcrowding incidents has prompted swift action from the RPF, with plans to extend patrol hours once additional personnel return from election duties. However, challenges persist, with overcrowding exacerbated by seasonal travel demands, particularly towards northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. While efforts to enhance security and manage overcrowding are underway, stakeholders emphasise the importance of collaborative measures to address these complex challenges effectively. By prioritising passenger safety and security, the RPF endeavours to create a safer and more secure commuting environment for all passengers traversing Mumbai’s bustling rail network.
