Royal Brunei Airlines Launches Direct Chennai-Bandar Seri Begawan Flights, Strengthening Ties

Royal Brunei Airlines, Brunei’s flagship carrier, has officially launched its direct tri-weekly flights between Chennai and Bandar Seri Begawan, marking a significant milestone in India-Brunei relations. The inaugural Airbus A320NEO was warmly received in Chennai on Tuesday night with a ceremonial water cannon salute, a gesture that symbolises the celebratory spirit of the new route, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Speaking on the launch, Captain Khalid Khan, CEO of Royal Brunei Airlines, highlighted the strategic importance of the Indian market, specifically Chennai, as a cultural and economic gateway. “India is an essential market for global aviation. The economy is experiencing rapid growth, and with it, the aviation industry is advancing swiftly. Chennai, with its deep cultural ties to Brunei, is a key destination for us,” he stated. The introduction of this route aims to attract more Indian travellers, foster business relations, and build upon shared cultural values. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), India is expected to become the third-largest aviation market by 2025, making it a crucial addition to Brunei’s route portfolio.

The new flights not only strengthen the bonds between India and Brunei but also reflect Royal Brunei Airlines’ commitment to sustainable aviation. Operating with the fuel-efficient Airbus A320NEO, the airline emphasises environmental responsibility by reducing carbon emissions. Such efforts align with global sustainability goals, ensuring that the growing demand for international travel does not compromise the ecological balance. This focus on eco-friendly aviation showcases Royal Brunei’s commitment to balancing connectivity and environmental stewardship.

In a broader civic and urban development context, this route offers a direct avenue for cultural exchange, tourism, and investment. For Chennai’s residents and businesses, this connection could foster economic opportunities and offer a seamless travel experience to a lesser-explored destination. Furthermore, the route serves as a nod to the increasingly significant cultural and commercial relationships developing across South Asia, showcasing how aviation serves as a critical enabler of global connectivity and diplomacy.
