The Uttar Pradesh government has expedited work on key road projects connecting the mega greenfield facility to the National Capital Region.
Officials have confirmed that the fast-tracked development includes new expressways, improved link roads, and integrated multi-modal corridors to ensure seamless access by the time the airport becomes operational. Positioned as India’s largest airport under construction, the Noida International Airport at Jewar is seen as a catalyst for economic transformation in western Uttar Pradesh. As the clock ticks towards its first phase opening in 2024-end, the urgency to deliver world-class road infrastructure has taken centre stage. The target is not only to ease passenger and freight movement but also to promote sustainable urban mobility in surrounding districts.
Among the headline projects is the ambitious 31-kilometre Greenfield link road that will connect the airport directly to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Once completed, this artery is expected to cut travel time between the airport and Gurgaon to under an hour, enhancing logistics efficiency while reducing vehicular congestion in the national capital. Equally important is the Eastern Peripheral Expressway link, which will provide smoother entry points for cargo and private vehicles arriving from states like Haryana and Uttarakhand. This connectivity is being designed with an eco-sensitive lens — including provisions for dedicated lanes for electric vehicles and intelligent traffic systems aimed at reducing idle time emissions.
Urban development experts believe that the road network, if implemented as planned, could become a model for climate-conscious infrastructure in India. The incorporation of solar-powered lighting, water harvesting facilities, and tree-lined buffers reflects a shift towards environment-first planning. According to government sources, nearly 40,000 trees will be planted alongside key stretches, with a focus on native, drought-resistant species. The state’s transport and infrastructure arms have also prioritised last-mile connectivity, particularly for commuters from Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and east Delhi. Several metro and RRTS (Regional Rapid Transit System) extensions are under consideration to complement road transport, thereby enabling low-emission multimodal mobility options for travellers and workers alike.
Residents of nearby villages and peri-urban settlements are expected to benefit significantly from the upgraded roads, which will improve access to jobs, healthcare, and education. At the same time, concerns around land acquisition and displacement have surfaced. Local authorities have pledged to maintain transparency and adopt equitable resettlement practices — a commitment being closely watched by civil society groups. Economists suggest that integrated connectivity will be critical in ensuring the airport’s success not only as a transit hub but as an anchor for regional economic development. By enhancing links to manufacturing clusters, agri-logistics hubs, and special economic zones, the state aims to convert western Uttar Pradesh into a high-value, low-carbon investment destination.
While questions remain about project timelines and coordination among various government departments, there is no doubt that the stakes are high. With global investors eyeing the Noida International Airport as a gateway to North India, road infrastructure could be the deciding factor between a visionary transport project and a logistical bottleneck.
