Road Marking Delays Hamper Traffic Violation Enforcement in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad’s road resurfacing efforts, undertaken by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), have inadvertently led to a delay in traffic enforcement due to the absence of essential road markings such as stop lines and signage at junctions.

Despite consistent road resurfacing initiatives, stop lines and other necessary markings are often missing for one to two months after the completion of the resurfacing works. Consequently, the city’s traffic police department is unable to issue e-memos for traffic violations, prompting them to seek timely action from the AMC.

Areas such as Tilakbagh, Khamasa Crossroads, Raikhad Crossroads, Nava Vadaj Vyaswadi junction, and various crossroads along the 132-ft Ring Road, which have undergone resurfacing, are notably lacking in stop lines. An AMC official explained that while extensive road resurfacing and white-topping projects are underway, the marking of stop lines and signage post-resurfacing is a crucial aspect that requires attention. Roads wider than 18 metres have their markings handled by the central workshop, while narrower roads fall under the purview of the engineering departments of different zones. Despite efforts to expedite the marking process, there remain nine roads wider than 18 metres where signage is yet to be marked.

The delay in marking signage is attributed to the need for the road surface to properly set, typically requiring one to two weeks to prevent the markings from being erased due to heat. The AMC has procured specialised machines for this purpose, with the central workshop marking stop lines and signage across 2,500 square metres daily. Additionally, zoning departments are working to mark signage in at least 1,000 square metres per day.

Ahmedabad city traffic police have highlighted instances where road resurfacing has been completed months ago, yet stop lines and signage remain absent. This delay poses challenges for traffic management and enforcement. Authorities are urging for expedited action to address the missing road markings and ensure smooth traffic flow and enforcement procedures in the city.
